Endless Playlists Aren't Music
The default music surface is now optimized to never let you pause. Albums end for a reason.

The default surface for music is now the endless playlist. Algorithmic, infinite, optimized to never let you pause.
Albums still matter for a specific reason: they end. An album asks you to commit to a duration. The shape of the listening matches the shape of the writing.
The endless playlist disposes of that contract. Each track is a slot-machine pull. Engagement metrics are great. Memory of any specific song is bad. Try recalling the third track of last week's algorithmic mix — you can't, because the format isn't designed to be recalled.
MetaDJ Music ships albums and collections on purpose. Track pages exist on purpose. The bottom player keeps state on purpose. Listening here is supposed to leave a residue.
If you read this and can't remember a single track from your last playlist session, the format already told you something.
